The Jewel: A flock of birds fossilized mid-flight into a precious jewel that is magnified by a shimmering light to evoke wonder.

The Nearness: A majestic fossilized flock of birds immersed in a vertical landscape. A captured memory to be encountered with a bewildering nearness.
La proximité: Une envolée d’oiseaux fossilisée se déployant dans un paysage vertical. Un souvenir captif à découvrir dans une proximité déroutante.
The Memorial: A murmuration of birds travelling across a landscape, fossilized in a moment of fragile beauty, serves as a respectful tribute to the elegance of living species and a lament for their disappearance.
La commémoration: Une nuée d’oiseaux survolant un paysage, fossilisée dans un moment de fragile beauté, constitue un hommage respectueux à la grâce des espèces vivantes et une commémoration de leur disparition.
The Forgotten: Carelessly discarded at our feet, the fossils of birds and natural habitats are a testimony to the collective indifference toward the beauty that surrounds us.
Les oubliés: Jetés négligemment à nos pieds, des fossiles d’oiseaux et d’habitats naturels témoignent de l’indifférence collective envers la beauté qui nous entoure.
The Seat: An experience set in a school environment, as a reminder of our homework and our individual responsibilities. The desk opens to reveal a tragic fossilized scene: a bird in danger, struggling to free itself from a natural disaster.
Le pupitre: Une expérience dans un cadre scolaire, comme un rappel de nos devoirs et de nos responsabilités individuelles : le panneau du pupitre s’ouvre sur une scène fossilisée tragique, un oiseau en danger, luttant pour se libérer d’une catastrophe naturelle.
The Gathering: Placed at the centre of a table, like a family matter of global concern, fossilized species come to life to invoke the idea of collective responsibility — a call to action.
Le rassemblement: Posée au centre d’une table comme une affaire de famille d’importance internationale, une espèce fossilisée reprend vie pour invoquer une responsabilité collective : un appel à l’action.
The Sanctuary: Wrapped in a white veil, an aviary — where humans are barred from entering — allows the swirling presence of birds to shine through in an animation evoking notions of freedom, respect and the preservation of living species.
Le sanctuaire: Enveloppée d’un voile blanc, une volière, dont l’entrée est interdite aux êtres humains, laisse transparaître la présence tournoyante des oiseaux au fil d’une animation évoquant les notions de liberté, de respect et de préservation des espèces vivantes.
The Awareness: An empty birdcage hangs above four chairs, which, when occupied, prompts the tranquil sounds of bird calls that elicit empathy and hope-filled awareness.
La conscience: Une cage à oiseaux vide suspendue au-dessus de quatre chaises, dans le jeu desquelles se révèle graduellement la douce mélodie d’un jardin d’oiseaux éveillant l’empathie et une conscience empreinte d’espoir.

Vision poétique d’un avenir incertain et réflexion sur notre présent, l’installation artistique TRACES interpelle le public et le sensibilise à la menace grandissante causée par les changements climatiques sur les écosystèmes.
Élaborée autour de l’idée de la disparition imminente de nos paysages et des espèces vivantes, l’oeuvre propose des expériences immersives et interactives visant à revaloriser les dialogues inclusifs, intimes et nécessaires entre l’être humain et la nature.
L’interprétation conceptuelle et esthétique d’une nuée d’oiseaux fossilisée en plein vol donne naissance à une famille d’artefacts témoignant d’une extinction accélérée des espèces menacées. Composée de huit expériences complémentaires, l’oeuvre crée l’émerveillement, provoque un sentiment d’attachement émotif et suscite une participation, aussi bien collective qu’individuelle — le tout avec le souhait d’ajouter humblement notre voix au concert de celles qui cherchent à inspirer une volonté d’agir à l’échelle internationale.

L’installation artistique TRACES est déployée sur le terrain du pavillon du Canada à l’Expo 2020 de Dubaï. Affaires mondiales Canada s’est associé à l’Office national du film du Canada (ONF) en collaboration de KANVA Architecture, pour le concept original, la direction créative et artistique et la conception de la production, de l’artiste indépendant Étienne Paquette, à la conception multimédias et à la direction artistique, et de Creos Experts-Conseils, à la direction de production.

A poetic vision of an uncertain future and a reflection on our present, the TRACES art installation challenges visitors and raises awareness about the growing threat to ecosystems caused by climate change.
Developed around the idea of the imminent disappearance of natural landscapes and living species, the artwork presents immersive and interactive experiences to emphasize the value of an inclusive, intimate and necessary dialogue between humans and nature.
The formal and conceptual interpretation of a murmuration of birds, fossilized mid-flight, takes the form of a family of artifacts that bear witness to the accelerated extinction of threatened species. Composed of eight (8) complementary experiences, the art installation creates a sense of wonder, that provokes feelings of emotional attachment, and encourages collective and individual participation — all with the desire to humbly add our voice to the chorus of those seeking to inspire the will to act on an international scale.

The artistic installation TRACES is featured in the Canada Pavilion on the Expo 2020 Dubai site. Global Affairs Canada has partnered with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in collaboration with KANVA Architecture, Original Concept, Creative Art Direction & Production Design, independent artist Étienne Paquette, Multimedia Design & Art Direction, and Creos Experts-Conseils, Production Direction to create the installation.
