Le James - McGill University Bookstore

La Librairie Le James de l’université McGill est une boutique conçue comme une extension du campus universitaire du centre-ville de Montréal. La librairie devient ici un espace intégralement connecté au campus, une sorte de catalyseur d’échanges et de fierté universitaire permettant aux étudiants de s’approprier les lieux.

Implantée sur deux niveaux (rez-de-chaussée et sous-sol), la librairie mise sur un grand escalier central comme outil de circulation et lien visuel. Son emplacement stratégique et ses dimensions généreuses sont une grande source de lumière naturelle au sous-sol, ancrant ainsi cet espace au contexte de la rue. L’usage du bambou, la transparence des garde-corps qui mettent en valeur la structure de béton originale et les estrades encouragent les connections pour faire du grand escalier un lieu de rassemblement propice aux échanges. La Librairie James contribue à la fierté de la communauté de McGill et renforce le sentiment d’appartenance à cette grande institution.

McGill's Le James Bookstore is a boutique designed as an extension of the university’s downtown Montreal campus. The bookstore becomes a fully connected campus space, a sort of catalyst for exchange and academic pride that allows students to take ownership of the site.

Located on two levels (ground floor and basement), the bookstore relies on a large central staircase as the circulation tool and visual link. Its strategic location and generous dimensions allow a great amount of natural light to brighten the basement, thus anchoring this space in the context of the street. The use of bamboo, the transparency of railings that highlight the original concrete structure and the platforms encourage connections to make the grand staircase a meeting place conducive to trade. The James Bookstore contributes to the pride of the McGill community and strengthens the sense of belonging to this great institution.
