Alexandra est un projet résidentiel de 38 unités d’habitation dans le secteur Marconi-Alexandra, à Montréal, un ancien quartier industriel près de la Petite Italie en phase de revitalisation. L’usine de textile désaffectée était riche en matériaux réutilisables: plafonds en pontage de bois, planchers de bois franc et escaliers en terrazzo.

L’agrandissement respecte l’horizontalité de la structure originale par l’alignement des joints et de la fenestration, ce qui crée une façade unie, l’utilisation de matériaux contrastants vient ponctuer l’axe longitudinal. Ainsi, la vocation industrielle du bâtiment original est mise en valeur par cette touche esthétique. La restauration du bâtiment existant combinée à la mise en valeur de ses caractéristiques par le concours d’un agrandissement moderne a guidé une intervention qui s’inscrit résolument dans la durabilité. 

Alexandra is a 38-unit residential project in Montreal’s Marconi-Alexandra district, a former industrial zone near Little Italy currently undergoing urban renewal. The abandoned textile mill was rich in usable materials like mill floor ceilings, hardwood floors and terrazzo staircases.

The addition reflects the horizontality of the original structure, aligning the joints and fenestration to create a unified front but using contrasting materials to break up the longitudinal span; the result accentuates the building’s initial industrial vocation while adding aesthetic allure. By restoring the existing building and playing up its features with a modern addition, the project makes a substantial gesture toward sustainability.
